Atlético Madrid's João Felix Suffers Knee Injury Ahead of Potential La Liga Return
Atlético Madrid star João Felix may miss the return of La Liga after suffering a knee injury in training.
The big-money signing from Benfica has flattered to deceive at times for Diego Simeone's side this season, as Atléti reached the last eight of the Champions League and are currently battling for a top-four place in Spain's top flight.
The 20-year-old - who has already missed 10 games through injury in all competitions for Atlético this season - is currently waiting for further evaluation, but is expected to spend more time on the treatment table.
Felix has made 28 appearances for Atlético this season with six goals and three assists to his name, so far struggling to live up to his £113m price tag.
The news comes as a major blow to the club as La Liga president Javier Tebas recently revealed 11 June as a potential restart date for Spain's top division.
The league was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the return of the German Bundesliga has encouraged many across Europe that football can resume amid the pandemic and - with 11 games left to conclude the season - Tebas is hoping the Sevilla vs Real Betis derby can kick start the return of La Liga.
With Diego Simeone's men currently sixth, just a point behind fourth place Real Sociedad and a potential Champions League finish, Atlético will have to be at their best throughout the final 11 games of the season.
With games against Barcelona, Getafe and Real Sociedad still to come, Simeone will be hoping he'll have the strongest squad possible available to him and will want someone of Felix's calibre on the teamsheet as he aims for a top-four finish, as well as progressing in the Champions League if and when the tournament returns.
